A Trip To Shadow Mountain Farm!

last sunday the mister, myself, squidkins (the little one), and our friend darcy headed out to Sooke to visit Shadow Mountain Farm. we were invited up by the lovely owner Kit, who is hoping the mister (a self taught mycologist) and our friend could help him set up a system for growing mushrooms. the farm is all based on sustainability, community, and preserving a world for the next generation.

they have two goats, pigs (which i unfortunately did not get a photo of), chickens, roosters, peacocks, ducks, geese and a couple of dogs- all free ranging about the farm (with the exception of the pigs). my favorite was a black duck that thinks its one of the geese. it tries to imitate their honking sounds and lives with them. the other ducks apparently thinks this is totally uncool and have shunned him, so the geese have adopted this ugly duckling.

on sunday's they run a little market. they've got an open trailer where the owners mum sells their free range eggs, jellies, jams, sweets, pies, cakes, bread, aprons, and a whole lot more! they also have plants, and hopefully soon, mushrooms! all her baked goods, and jams, etc are made as much as possible with ingredients sourced within a 100 miles of the farm, and are amazing! we picked up some jalapeno jelly and some mini coffee cakes.

squid being very helpful and carrying daddy's keys
the chickens eating out the bin. this is full of grains previously used to brew their own beer. we're hoping it can also be used to grow the mushrooms on- recycling it all two fold

goat! they wanted nothing to do with cedar and i due to being females and in heat, the boys on the other hand couldn't get away from these ladies.

there was a cute little dog on the farm that i unfortunately didn't get a photo of, but cedar was in love with it. out of everything we saw, it was pretty much the only thing he cared about.

our tastey tastey treats

overall it was a delightful day. i'm really looking forward to visiting more often, and about the mister's work up there! these guys really have some brilliant and sustainable ideas and i am pretty excited to have them in my son's life.
